In one of my earlier pieces on the Arab revolutions (Tunisia's tide of defiance), I cautioned those brave souls risking life and limb for the cause of freedom in the Arab world to "beware the French" by being vigilant against their "behind the scenes machinations and manoeuvrings".

Remarkably, my fear of French deceit has been realised far quicker than I imagined. After first colonising and then propping up for decades some of the worst despots in North Africa with economic, financial and political support, the French government found itself wrong-footed by the overthrow of Tunisia's long-running autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Let us not forget that just days before Ben Ali was deposed in January, French officials - in the form of the now discredited former foreign minister Michele Alliot-Marie - offered the Tunisian regime security assistance in quelling the protests, while the same officials were making merriment in Tunisia on private holidays paid for by Ben Ali's cronies.

AFP - The Australian military was hit by another scandal Wednesday after a young army recruit allegedly filmed himself having sex with a female cadet and broadcast it via Skype to his friends.
Defence Minister Stephen Smith said, if proven, he could not imagine a greater "betrayal of trust", after the unnamed 18-year-old woman at the elite Australian Defence Force Academy went public with her claims.
She told the Ten Network she only became aware of the incident when she was contacted by Defence investigators who were alerted by another cadet.
The woman alleges she had consensual sex but, unknown to her, her partner had set up webcams in the room with six of his friends watching the feed nearby.
Still photos were also taken and had circulated at the academy, Australia's premier college for military recruits.
"It was like my whole world came crashing down around me," she said.
"They had to read the statements that the boys had to make and I actually threw up. I had to be asked to be excused from the interview because it made me physically ill."
The case is being examined by police and defence officials have warned that anyone found to have committed a crime faces termination of their military career.
Australia's military has gained an unwanted reputation for having a booze culture and for the targeting of women, underscored in a recent 400-page report about incidents on the supply ship HMAS Success in 2009.
The report examined allegations of a "predatory culture" and drunken misconduct among sailors, including the keeping of a list known as "The Ledger" which put dollar values on sexual conquests with female colleagues.
Smith warned that any conduct in the military that tarnished Australia's reputation would not be tolerated and defended the woman's decision to go public with her allegations.
"I believe a public airing of this issue in all of the circumstances was appropriate," he said.
"I don't believe the young woman concerned should be viewed poorly or dimly as a result of bringing this matter to public attention."
Defence force personnel need to be able to trust each other, Smith added.
"In those circumstances I can't think of a greater betrayal of trust of a colleague in the workplace than the suggestions that have been made," he told reporters.

The Real McCain by Cliff Schecter, which will arrive in bookstores next month, reports an angry exchange between McCain and his wife that happened in full view of aides and reporters during a 1992 campaign stop. An advance copy of the book was obtained by RAW STORY.
Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

Sexual assaults in the military

by Frederick R. Bedell Jr.

I've just received a communication from a women who calls herself, "Lady Marine.' She says: Why don't I write about her sisters in arms who are being abused in the military. Well, I have to admit... I was not aware of the extent of this abuse. I did some research and have only touched the surface and was amazed at the extent of this abuse. I have found this most disturbing. Women have now become an important part in modern warfare and in our fight aganist terrorism. There are now about 200,000 active duty women serving today. One in three female soldiers experiences sexual assaults as opposed to one in six in the civilian world. The Pentagon reported that 2,900 sexual assaults occured in 2009 alone. Of those investigated, only 181 were prosecuted. In the majority of those cases, offenders got a reduce in pay and a reduction in rank. Defense Secretary Robert Gates had called for a military review of the training and experience of investigators and prosecuted for sexual cases. That was two years ago. I had served in the military about thirty years ago and had always respected women in the military and those I knew did also. So, what is happening in today's military? I feel we all need to respect the rights of all women. They are our mothers, wives, sisters and girlfriends. Let's also remember, as men -- we would not be here if it were not for women who are the vehicle for our very existence. The Defense department needs to do more. Women are defending our country as well as men and need to be respectedl. I'm calling for all concerned citizens to write to their Congress persons and Senators so they can look into these vile attacks upon women. This has to stop! Remember this: Evil thrives when good people do nothing.

Ms. Christopher left the Navy. As she put it: “My military career ended. My assailant’s didn’t.”
Rape and other forms of sexual assault against women is the great shame of the U.S. armed forces, and there is no evidence that this ghastly problem, kept out of sight as much as possible, is diminishing.

The U.S. military's 'rape epidemic'

Current and former soldiers are suing the Pentagon, accusing it of failing to prevent rape within the military. Will this public protest make women in uniform safer?

America's military culture has consistently failed to prevent rape and sexual assault, say plaintiffs involved in a landmark lawsuit against the Pentagon.

This week, 17 veterans and active-duty service members filed a landmark lawsuit accusing the Pentagon of looking the other way despite frequent reports of rape and other abuse against women in the armed forces. The suit singles out Defense Secretary Robert Gates and his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld, accusing them of running an institution in which violence against women is tolerated. A Pentagon spokesman said "sexual assault is a wider societal problem" and the military is trying to prevent it, just as civilian leaders are. What might the lawsuit accomplish? (Watch an AP report about the lawsuit)

Our house was broken into.Well what did you expect, you had a doormat that said WELCOME on your front porch. You were basically asking to be burglarized. You won’t really say that, right? Now let replace a house burglary to a RAPE:
I was raped.Well what did you expect, you were wearing a short skirt and drinking. You were basically asking to be raped. As dumb as that comment sounds it is exactly what many rape survivors experience being told after reporting a sexual assault. We have to offer our respect for our comrades who report an assault and by doing so we need to believe, support and not blame the survivor.

Foreign military bases in UAE

The conservative president of France Nicolas Sarkozy visited UAE in January 2008 and the French government announced that France will set up a permanent military base in UAE. As part of the agreement, France will help set up a nuclear power plant in the country. [8] [9]
