Founding & history
Founding member Dr. Joseph Retinger, (economist, political philosopher and communist Poland's Charge d'Affaires) was a major proponent of a united Europe. Other founding members were Prince Bernhard, Colin Gubbins (former director of the British Special Operations Executive) and General Walter Bedell Smith, former U.S. Ambassador to Moscow and CIA Director. Gen. Bedell later became an Under Secretary of State in the Eisenhower Administration. Their first meeting was held at the Hotel de Bilderberg in Oosterbeek, Holland from May 29-31, in 1954. The Logan Act is a United States federal law that forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. It was passed in 1799 and last amended in 1994. Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years.
