Excerpt:
Family Soros was born in Budapest, Kingdom of Hungary, the son of the Esperantist writer Tivadar Soros and Elizabeth Soros. Tivadar (also known as Teodoro) was a Hungarian Jew, who was a prisoner of war during and after World War I and eventually escaped from Russia to rejoin his family in Budapest.[11][12] The family changed its name from Schwartz to Soros in 1936, in response to growing anti-semitism with the rise of fascism. Tivadar liked the new name because it is a palindrome and has a meaning. Although the specific meaning is left unstated in Kaufman's biography, in Hungarian, soros means next in line, or designated successor; and, in Esperanto, it means "will soar".[13] Tivadar taught George to speak Esperanto from birth. Soros later said that he grew up in a Jewish home and that his parents were cautious with their religious roots.[14] Married and divorced twice, Soros has three children with Annaliese Witschak (Robert, Andrea, Jonathan) and two with Susan Weber Soros (Alexander and Gregory). His elder brother, Paul Soros, also a private investor and philanthropist, is an engineer, who headed Soros Associates and established the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for Young Americans.[15][16] Soros' nephew Peter Soros, a son of Paul Soros, married the former Flora Fraser – a daughter of Lady Antonia Fraser and the late Sir Hugh Fraser and a stepdaughter of the late 2005 Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter. Fraser and Soros separated in 2009. [17] His son Alexander Soros is also gaining prominence for his donations to social and political causes. Alexander led the list of student political donors in the 2010 election cycle.[18]

Marriages and later life

From 1956 until their divorce in 1977, she was married to Sir Hugh Fraser (1918–1984), a descendant of Scottish aristocracy 14 years her senior and a Conservative Unionist MP in the House of Commons (sitting for Stafford), who was a friend of the American Kennedy family.[9] They had six children: three sons, Benjamin, Damian, and Orlando; and three daughters, Rebecca, Flora, and Natasha (Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni), who are all also writers and biographers.[7][9] Benjamin works for JPMorgan, Damian is the managing director of the investment banking firm UBS AG (formerly S. G. Warburg) in Mexico, and Orlando is a barrister specializing in commercial law (Wroe).[7] Antonia Fraser has 18 grandchildren.[3]
On 22 October 1975, Hugh and Antonia Fraser, together with Caroline Kennedy, who was visiting them at their Holland Park home, in Kensington, west London, were almost blown up by an IRA car bomb placed under the wheels of his Jaguar, which had been triggered to go off at 9 am when he left the house; the bomb exploded killing the cancer researcher Gordon Hamilton-Fairley (1930–1975). Hamilton-Fairley, a neighbour of the Frasers, had been walking his dog.[4][9][10]
In 1975 Antonia Fraser began an affair with playwright Harold Pinter, who was then married to the actress Vivien Merchant.[1][7] In 1977, after she had been living with Pinter for two years, the Frasers' union was legally dissolved.[1][7] Merchant spoke about her distress publicly to the press, which quoted her cutting remarks about her rival, but she resisted divorcing Pinter.[1][7] In 1980, after Merchant signed divorce papers, Fraser and Pinter married.[1][4][7] After the deaths of both their spouses, they were married by the Catholic Church in the person of Fr. Michael Campbell-Johnson, a Jesuit.[11]
Harold Pinter died on 24 December 2008.[3]
She lives in the London district of Holland Park, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, south of Notting Hill Gate, in the Fraser family home, where she still writes in her fourth-floor study.[1][2][12]
Correcting those who notice only her physical beauty—remarked upon both in her youth and well into her seventh decade—some commentators stress that, "more than just a pretty face", she is an accomplished historian and "an intellectual".[13]
Already Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to literature.[14]

"And Mexico has become a much more democratic country, so it's no longer sufficient to have a good relationship with the president and the finance minister to make things work the way you want. The bride, for her part, boasted the truest of blue Tory roots: Sir Winston Churchill was her great-grandfather. Richard Hambro, her father, is from the banking family, and her mother, Charlotte, is now married to Earl Peel, a land-owning descendent of Sir Robert Peel, one of the most influential Tory PM's of the Victorian era.
On paper, the Hambro and Fraser clans ought to mix about as well as two up-market brands of oil and water. The sight of 600 society guests eyeballing each other during the service and subsequent reception at Claridge's prompted one of their number to declare the event "a political genealogist's wet dream".
The groom was more tactful. "My mother's family is very left-wing and Clemmie's is very conservative," was how he explained things. "It would be safe to say that our wedding will bring all sorts of different people together."

Richard Hambro

Richard Hambro, who died on April 25 aged 62, was a member of the Hambro banking dynasty, a leading investment manager and philanthropist, and a well-known figure on the Turf.

As founder chairman of JO Hambro Investment Management in 1986, Richard Hambro developed it into a successful independent concern which, in 2000, was sold to Credit Suisse. At the same time he was a major supporter of British cancer charities. His own last years were marked by a brave fight against cancer, a disease that also claimed the life of his mother.
Richard Hambro
As a passionate supporter of horse racing, Hambro served as a steward at Sandown and Ascot before being elected a member of the Jockey Club. He was later chairman of Newmarket racecourse. His other great passion was Wiltons, the famous St James's restaurant, which had been bought by his grandfather during the Second World War and remains in the family to this day.
Richard Alexander Hambro was born on October 1 1946, the middle son of Jocelyn Hambro and Silvia Muir. The Hambro banking dynasty traces its descent from Calmer Levy, a young Jewish merchant of Hamburg who moved to Copenhagen in 1778 to marry a cousin and take over his new father-in-law's trading business.
Following Danish custom, Calmer wanted to adopt the name of his native town, but it was misspelt on the tradesman's licence issued to him by the Copenhagen authorities and became Hambro.
Calmer's grandson, Carl Joachim, established a banking business in London in 1839, which flourished particularly in financing trade with Scandinavia. In the sixth generation of the dynasty, Richard's father was a stylish and entrepreneurial chairman of Hambros Bank from 1965 to 1972, when he was succeeded by his cousin Charles (later Lord) Hambro.
Richard was educated at Eton and Munich University before joining the family firm, one of the City's leading merchant banks.
He worked in South Africa and Italy before, in 1973, marrying Charlotte Soames, the youngest daughter of Lord and Lady Soames and the granddaughter of Winston Churchill. They had a daughter, Clementine, who in 1981 enchanted the public as the youngest bridesmaid at the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

(AP)  A former teacher who claims she was unfairly dismissed from Eton College after being ordered to help Prince Harry cheat on an exam played a secretly recorded tape of conversations she said prove her allegations.

The former teacher, Sarah Forsyth, 30, has told the tribunal that she wrote nearly all the text of an art project that Prince Harry submitted to pass an important exam in 2002. The grade helped him win admission to his next school, Sandhurst, where he is now training as a military officer.

Forsyth's attorney, Robin Allen, quoted Harry as saying on the tape: "It was a tiny, tiny bit. I did about a sentence of it." The tape was not played during the hearing.

Forsyth claims that Prince Harry, the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, was referring to the amount of work that he had done on the project submitted to the exam board.

However, Eton later released its own transcript of the tape, with a slightly different quote: "I was, like, a sentence in it."

Paddy Harverson, a spokesman for Prince Charles, told the hearing that the allegations had previously been disproved and it was unfair for Forsyth's lawyers to give the court only a small portion of the tape. Harverson and accused them of having "placed their own interpretation upon it."

"The tape ... contains barely audible half-sentences, and it appears to have been edited," Harverson said. "It is also difficult to tell what Harry is saying and what he is referring to, due to the poor quality of the recording and the disjointed nature of the tape. The fact remains Harry did not cheat."

Nigel Giffen, a lawyer for Eton, called Forsyth's conduct "pretty grubby."

Thursday's hearing was held to prepare for next year's tribunal on Forsyth's alleged unfair dismissal.

Forsyth claims she was fired on June 16, 2003 as a teacher at Eton, one of Britain's most prestigious private elementary and secondary schools, after being harassed by Ian Burke, then head of Eton's art department. She said Burke ordered her to do some of the work on Prince Harry's art project.

Prince Harry's Nazi Blunder Burns Old Blighty

    By Glenn Frankel
    Washington Post Foreign Service
    Friday, January 14, 2005; Page C01

LONDON, Jan. 13 -- Now surely we've all faced this problem: We've been invited to a costume party at someone's country estate and nothing in the closet is quite right. What to wear? For Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, here's the answer that came to mind: dress up as a German soldier, complete with army uniform and Nazi armband.
Unfortunately for Harry, a redheaded 20-year-old with an ever-expanding reputation for bad judgment, someone at the party Saturday night took his photograph and sold it to the Sun, Britain's most carnivorous tabloid. The result was splashed across the front page of Thursday's paper: "Harry the Nazi," screamed the headline, superimposed upon a photo of Prince Charles's and the late Princess Diana's second son, sporting a cigarette, a drink and a swastika.

The spin machine at Clarence House, Charles's official residence, shifted into high gear, immediately issuing a brief statement of contrition in Harry's name -- "I am very sorry if I have caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize" -- and spending the rest of the day anonymously briefing the British press about (a) how very, very stupid Harry had been and (b) how very, very crushed he felt.
Still, the apology wasn't enough to head off a storm of criticism. Politicians weighed in, starting with the leaders of two of Britain's main political parties, who called on Harry to appear personally and apologize more fully. A former armed forces minister, Doug Henderson, went further and demanded that Harry resign from Sandhurst, the elite military academy where he is scheduled to begin an officer training course later this year.
"After the revelations, I don't think this young man is suitable for Sandhurst," Henderson told reporters. "If it was anyone else the application wouldn't be considered."
Members of the Jewish community were stunned. Greville Janner, a member of the House of Lords and former president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, called Harry's behavior "stupid, thoughtless, tactless." The headline on a hastily penned editorial for Friday's weekly Jewish Chronicle reads: "Mind Boggling."
"People are genuinely surprised and offended," said the Chronicle's editor, Ned Temko. "The instinct always among the leadership of the Jewish community is 'Don't make a federal case out of it.' Some people will excuse him by saying he's just 20, but he is, after all, part of an institution seen as embodying what it is to be British."
Harry's timing was impeccably bad, coming exactly two weeks before Europe solemnly commemorates the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp in Poland by Soviet troops. Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, has invited Holocaust survivors and British war veterans who helped liberate them to a reception at St. James's Palace, and she will attend a Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration at Westminster Hall. Harry's uncle Prince Edward will represent the queen at a memorial service at Auschwitz.
Temko said Harry's statement of contrition was sorely lacking. "It implied this was a wardrobe problem," he said. "Whatever further statement he makes, there has to be some reflection that a swastika armband isn't just a fashion item, that it symbolizes a lot more. One of the most dismaying aspects for Jews and non-Jews is that there seems to be an utter lack of awareness of the context of the Holocaust and the war."
This is hardly the first time that Harry has drawn public attention for boorish or outrageous behavior. Three years ago his father dispatched him to observe a drug rehabilitation center after he was caught smoking marijuana. There have been a number of instances of public intoxication, and last October he scuffled with a paparazzo outside a London nightclub. But two weeks ago he and his older brother, William, spent a day at a warehouse helping ship relief supplies to tsunami victims in southern Asia, bolstering the image their late mother had painstakingly cultivated as a caring royal.
Saturday's "fancy-dress" party was thrown by Olympic show jumper Richard Meade for his son Harry's 22nd birthday. The theme was "Native and Colonial," and Prince William reportedly showed up wearing a lion and leopard outfit that he made himself, complete with black leggings.
William is two years older than his brother and supposedly better equipped in the brains and judgment department. But it apparently did not occur to him to tell his brother to lose the Nazi regalia. Or if he did, Harry paid no heed.
Harry came to the party wearing an army jacket with a German flag on the arm, the Sun reported. When he took it off, the khaki shirt underneath included a Wehrmacht badge on the collar and the swastika armband. An anonymous partygoer told the Sun that people were shocked by the outfit. "What on Earth was Harry thinking?" one asked.
Some commentators were quick to blame Prince Charles, still seen by some royal watchers as the villain in the Charles-and-Di saga, which ended in a bitter divorce.
"I'm sorry -- the Prince of Wales, he's a humanitarian and he does some terrific work, but I don't think he has . . . the right discipline over his children, particularly Prince Harry," Dickie Arbiter, a former Buckingham Palace press officer, told Sky News.
But others pleaded for time and patience. They say Harry is a sensitive young man, scarred by his glamorous mother's death in a 1997 car crash, who is deeply affected by criticism and needs space to mature.
"Give him a break," said royal biographer Robert Lacey. "We all make mistakes when we're young -- the difference is our mistakes aren't photographed and sold to the Sun."
Lacey says it would be inappropriate for Harry to appear publicly for now or to attend one of the Holocaust memorial events. "He should lie low for a while. The sooner he gets to Sandhurst the better."
A palace official told Reuters that there were no plans for Prince Harry to attend the ceremonies. "It would be a distraction and a detraction from the importance of the occasion because it would become a different story in media terms," the official said.
But the Sun on Friday reported that Prince Charles, "incandescent with rage," has ordered both of his sons to make a private visit to Auschwitz. The tabloid quoted an unnamed royal source as saying, "There will be no publicity and they will go with a Jewish charity."

    • In England, where 60,000 people were killed by Hitler's bombers, newspaper readers were stunned at seeing Prince Harry in Nazi uniform. He is not disputing the photo's authenticity.  (AP)

(CBS/AP)  A furious Prince Charles has ordered both his sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust, in light of Harry's already infamous blunder of wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party, the Sun newspaper reports in London Friday.

The paper, which broke the story of the latest royal misadventure, says Charles also feels William must share the blame, since he was in the costume shop when Harry picked the offensive outfit, and should have stopped his younger brother.

The visit, according to the Sun, will be private.

Without commenting on the accuracy of the Sun report, Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine, told The Early Show, "There's no way Harry would go to Auschwitz. And I'm sure he…knows all about the Holocaust."

What would have prompted such an insensitive act?

"I'm afraid he's not intellectually very bright," Seward says. "He's rather inclined to do things on the spur of the moment and think about the consequences afterwards, and that's always been his way. But he did have an education at the most expensive and probably the best...school in the world. He had five years at Eton, where he certainly would have learned about the Holocaust. I suppose you can put it down to gross stupidity.

"I'm totally in agreement with (the politicians) who said he should come on television and (apologize) himself. I think both William and Harry, when they get into scrapes, should come out and be their own masters. (If he had apologized) in person, I think it would have died down."

Ken Whafe, who was a bodyguard for Princess Diana and sons William and Harry, wondered why Harry's current bodyguards didn't warn him of the impropriety of what he was about to do. He told Smith royal bodyguards will often discreetly offer such advice.

He adds that he agrees with Seward: "Harry did something that was stupid, and I think there was no sinister motive for him to offend anybody."

CBS News Correspondent Mark Phillips, in London, calls Harry "the current royal gaffe champion -- accused of binge-drinking and of attacking a prying photographer last summer."

"As royal gaffes go," notes Phillips, "this one has set new standards for effectiveness. It's managed to upset everybody... Holocaust survivors and victims families, ethnic and religious groups, war veterans and those who lost people in the war.

"Some are now wondering if Harry's desire to pursue a military career is really a good idea. Apology or not, this is an image that may haunt him for the rest of his life."

Before the report of Charles' demand came out, the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged Harry to make just such a trip. "We strongly urge Prince Harry to accompany the British delegation on Jan. 27 to the Auschwitz death camp to commemorate 60 years since liberation," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Wiesenthal center. "There, he will see the results of the hated symbol he so foolishly and brazenly chose to wear."

"What Harry did was both stupid and evil," said Lord Janner, a senior figure in Britain's Jewish community. "The time has come for him to make a public apology."

Harry made his first apology Wednesday night, in a statement, just as The Sun newspaper's first edition was hitting the streets with a big headline saying HARRY THE NAZI and a picture of the young royal wearing a swastika armband.

"I think a lot of people will be disappointed to see that photograph and it will cause a lot of offense," said Michael Howard, leader of Britain's main opposition Conservative Party.

"I think it might be appropriate for him to tell us himself just how contrite he now is," added Howard, who is Jewish.

Prime Minister Tony Blair sidestepped the furor. "Prince Harry has made it clear that he is very sorry about it. The rest of it is best to leave Buckingham Palace to comment on," he told BBC radio.

Doug Henderson, a legislator and former defense ministry official, said Harry was unfit to take his place at Sandhurst, the military academy.

But Janner said: "I would send him in the army as fast as possible. I hope that would teach him not to behave like that."

The action also upset many Israelis.

Vice Premier Shimon Peres called it "very bizarre."

"Well, the next time he will dress up and behave like a prince," Peres said.

The young prince has been a favorite topic of the tabloids in the past few years, reporting on his love life, alleged misadventures and scrapes with propriety, including a scuffle with a photographer last October and an accusation from a former teacher at Eton College who claims she was ordered to help him cheat his way through an important examination.

And in 2002, Charles made Harry spend a day at a drug rehabilitation center after he was caught smoking marijuana and indulging in underage drinking.

Harry is currently enrolled at Sandhurst, where he is in training for a career as an officer in the army.

He is third in line for the throne.

But a good indication of societal decadence is when it prefers to obsess over fictional offences rather than real ones.

Belarus: Blast rocks Minsk metro near Lukashenko office

The explosion happened at the height of rush hour, as David Stern reports

    Related Stories

Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko says 11 people were killed and hundreds injured in an explosion in the metro system of the capital, Minsk.
He called for a moment of silence to honour those killed in the blast, which struck a metro station close to his main office and residence.
The cause of the explosion, at 1755 local time (1555 GMT), is not known.
But in televised remarks, Mr Lukashenko said it was aimed at undermining "peace and stability".
And he hinted at foreign involvement, linking the explosion to a blast at a concert in 2008 in which about 50 people were injured.
"These are perhaps links in a single chain. We must find out who gained by undermining peace and stability in the country, who stands behind this," Mr Lukashenko said.
"I do not rule out that this [blast] was a gift from abroad."
Witnesses said there was a flash and a bang as passengers got off a train which had just pulled into the Oktyabrskaya metro station in the city centre.
    map
One said at least part of the station's ceiling had collapsed after the explosion.
An eyewitness, Maskim Lew, told Ekho Moskvy radio: "There are a lot of special forces troops, a lot of ambulances and firemen.
"Some people are being treated on the spot, some are being taken away, some - those who are conscious and in a more or less normal state - are being helped into ambulances."
The metro was all cordoned off, he said.
A police spokesman told reporters Minsk had been placed on "heightened alert".
Exits from the station lead both to Mr Lukashenko's main office and his residence, as well as the country's powerful security council.
Mr Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, claimed victory in a presidential election last December, but international observers condemned the vote.
Immediately afterwards, dozens of opposition figures - activists and presidential campaigners - were rounded up and arrested. Some are still in jail.
Tensions are rising in the former Soviet republic, says the BBC's David Stern in Kiev. As well as the political tensions, Belarus has also suffered economic difficulties since the beginning of the year.

He briefed his listeners on his early interest in cultural activities in general, and plastic arts and poetry in particular.
A poet and plastic artist since he was student, Prince Khalid was assigned as Head of the Youth Welfare during the era of late King Faisal bin Abdulaziz.
Prince Khalid cast light on the cultural activity of King Faisal Charity Foundation. He disclosed that the foundation is planning to establish Alfaisal University in Riyadh.

My translation skills aren’t so great that I can give you a full and detailed transcript of the interview, but here are some highlights:
    • Prince Khaled: Less than 10% of Jeddah has a drainage system, which is old and is probably not 100% efficient
    • Floods were not taken into consideration nor anticipated
    • Traffic and road conditions made it difficult for Civil Defense to move from one area to another, which is why helicopters were used.
[At 00:06:38, the woman is nodding. I wonder what she's really thinking...]
    • Fatalities: 10 | Missing people: 5, only 1 was found | Injuries: 4 | Rescued: 497 by helicopter, and 2580 by boats and cars | 86000 people lost electricity and most got it back the next night and I think they all got their electricity back by now | 16,790 people have been given shelter | [...] more than 25,000 buildings damaged
Am I the only one having trouble believing that only 10 died and 4 injured?! I honestly stopped listening there, because refusing to acknowledge that more people died is a serious matter. I can’t even take this interview seriously.

A typical misconception of Saudi Arabia is that every Saudi is rich and has his or her own oil well.  The truth of the matter is that while the Kingdom may have some individuals who are excessively rich, some who are middle class as well as pockets of individuals who are in fact very poor.  And yes, we are talking about Saudis here; not expats in the Kingdom.  Homelessness is not something that is widely discussed or publicized but it does exist in the Kingdom.  Oftentimes one can go to one of the local Tamimi (Safeway) grocery stores and see a Saudi national (male or female) who may be begging for his or her family.  There are also areas in Mecca where groups of homeless Saudis have created tent cities underneath overpasses for they have nowhere else to go. http://en.beta.rian.ru/analysis/20110317/163052343.html Excerpt:  ssia is in a strong position to exert influence over the Belarusian authorities, who have found themselves isolated by a travel ban from the European Union and economic sanctions from the United States over human rights abuses. The EU is currently in talks on extending its sanctions to include prosecutors, judges and officers from the country's secret service connected with the trials of those detained in December's protests. The Belarusian secret service is investigating more than 46 individuals on riot charges and 30, including two former presidential candidates, remain in prison. Four people have already been sentenced to up to four years in jail. Human Rights Watch has accused the Belarusian authorities of exerting pressure on lawyers representing those facing charges, denying access to defense council and conducting raids on human rights organizations.

    Excerpts;
    1) When his family’s finances became secure, he began devoting most of his time to public causes and was later dubbed the “People’s Lawyer.” He insisted on serving on cases without pay so that he would be free to address the wider issues involved. The Economist magazine calls him "A Robin Hood of the law." Among his notable early cases were actions fighting railroad monopolies; defending workplace and labor laws; helping create the Federal Reserve System; and presenting ideas for the new Federal Trade Commission (FTC). He achieved recognition by submitting a case brief, later called the "Brandeis Brief," which relied on expert testimony from people in other professions to support his case, thereby setting a new precedent in evidence presentation.

    2) Against big corporations
As Klebanow and Jonas make clear, Brandeis was becoming increasingly conscious of and hostile to powerful corporations and the trend toward bigness in American industry and finance. He argued bigness conflicted with efficiency and added a new dimension to the Efficiency Movement of the Progressive Era. As early as 1895 he had pointed out the harm that giant corporations could do to competitors, customers, and their own workers. The growth of industrialization was creating mammoth companies which he felt threatened the well-being of millions of Americans.[2]:76 Although the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was enacted in 1890, it was not until the 1900s that there was any major effort to apply it.
In fact, by 1910 Brandeis noticed that even America's leadership, including President Theodore Roosevelt, were beginning to question the value of antitrust policies. Business experts were contending that "there was nothing that could prevent to continuing concentration of industry and therefore, like it or not, big business was here to stay."[2]:76 As a result, leaders like Roosevelt saw the need to "regulate," but not limit, the growth and operation of corporate monopolies, whereas Brandeis felt the trend to bigness should be slowed, if not reversed. His experience convinced him that monopolies and trusts were "neither inevitable nor desirable." In support of Brandeis's position were presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan and Robert M. LaFollette, senator from Wisconsin.[2]
Brandeis furthermore denied that large trusts were more efficient than the smaller firms which were generally driven out of business. He argued the opposite was often true, that monopolistic enterprises became "less innovative" because, he wrote, their "secure positions freed them from the necessity which has always been the mother of invention." To him there was no way an executive could learn all the details of running a huge and unwieldy company. "There is a limit to what one man can do well," he wrote. Brandeis was naturally aware of the economies of scale and initially lower prices offered by growing companies, but he emphasized the future by claiming that once a trust drove out its competition, "the quality of its products tended to decline while the prices charged for them tended to go up." Eventually, he felt, the trusts would be like "clumsy dinosaurs, which, if they ever had to face real competition, would collapse of their own weight." In an address to the Economic Club of New York in 1912, he said:
"We learned long ago that liberty could be preserved only by limiting in some way the freedom of action of individuals; that otherwise liberty would necessarily yield to absolutism; and in the same way we have learned that unless there be regulation of competition, its excesses will lead to the destruction of competition, and monopoly will take its place.
"A large part of our people have also learned that efficiency in business does not grow indefinitely with the size of business. Very often, a business grows in efficiency as it grows from a small business to a large business; but there is a unit of greatest efficiency in every business, at any time, and a business may be too large to be efficient, as well as too small. Our people have also learned to understand the true reason for a large part of those huge profits which have made certain trusts conspicuous. They have learned that these profits are not due in the main to efficiency, but are due to the control of the market, to the exercise by a small body of men of the sovereign taxing power."[16]

    [edit] Against mass consumerism

Among Brandeis's key themes was the conflict he saw between nineteenth-century values with its culture of the small producer, against an emerging twentieth-century age of big business and its consumerist mass society. McCraw notes that Brandeis's "hostility to the new consumerism found vivid expression in his own behavior. Though himself a millionaire, he disliked most other wealthy persons, being profoundly disturbed by their ostentatious consumption." He never shopped for his own clothes, preferring to reorder the same suits that served him well, nor did he own a yacht like his friends, but was satisfied with his canoe.
As a result, he developed a hatred of advertising and a loss of respect for the average "manipulated" consumer. He recognized that a dependence by newspapers and magazines on advertising for their revenues caused them to be "less free" than they should be. And national advertisers further undermined the relationship between consumers and local businesses. He went so far, writes McCraw, as to "urge journalists to 'teach the public' such lessons as 'to look with suspicion upon every advertised article'."
But in general, Brandeis felt that consumers were becoming "servile, self-indulgent, indolent, [and] ignorant." The consumer, he said, "had abrogated his role as a countervailing power against bigness. . . He lies not only supine, but paralyzed, and deserves to suffer like others who take their lickings 'lying down.'" He was repelled by the flaunting materialism overtaking America, often denouncing conspicuous consumption. But by doing so, notes McCraw, "he drifted imperceptibly into an attack on consumer preference, a principle that lies at the very core of a market economy."[7]:107

Louis Brandeis, Zionism & The Federal Reserve: An Interesting Connection

Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941) was a highly influential American lawyer and theorist of Antitrust during the Progressive Era. As an advisor to President Woodrow Wilson, he was a driving force in the passage of the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, and the law establishing the Federal Trade Commission. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1916, he was the leading liberal on the Court (1916-1939), a proponent of small business and an enemy of bigness, and a leader of the Zionist movement to build up Israel.
He was a strong advocate of Natural Rights and freedom of speech. He graduating from Harvard Law School in 1877, were he co-wrote the famous article "The Right to Privacy," in 1890. [1] As a leading lawyer in Boston he supported the union movement, women's rights and an increase in the minimum wage; he fought monopolistic railroads. In 1916 he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court, and was confirmed despite strong conservative opposition. He served until 1939. Although a supporter of government intervention and some of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal he opposed bigness and argued that the National Recovery Administration was unconstitutional. He is most famous for opposing big business and defining the right to privacy.

Denver Water Board Fluoride Action #2 We Are Change Colorado

Denver Water Board Fluoride Action #2 We Are Change Colorado
We Are Change Colorado Confronts Denver Water Board of Commissioners
    on Fluoridation
    April 20, 2011
    Katie Bewersdorf
    WACC Media
We Are Change Colorado (WACC) has launched a campaign to put a stop to
water fluoridation throughout the entire state. They are beginning
with Denver Water – serving one million customers, nearly one third of
    the state’s population.
Citing research by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the
National Research Council (NRC), evidence for dental fluorosis’
increased effect on African-American children was brought before the
Board of Commissioners on March 9, 2011.
In light of the evidence, WACC hopes to gain steps forward in the
fight against the addition of fluoride to public drinking water.
Over twenty concerned citizens were present at the March meeting, and
made their objections known to the Board. Video of this presentation
    can be viewed here:

Denver Water adds sodium silicofluoride, a complex molecule containing
fluorine, silicon, and sodium to its water. Unlike pharmaceutical
grade sodium fluoride, this product’s safety and effectiveness has not
been demonstrated as admitted by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). Furthermore, an increase in cases of dental fluorosis
has led to an announcement of a decrease in the recommended fluoride
levels in public drinking water according to the the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the EPA. Last January, in a
surprising announcement, the recommended fluoridation level was
lowered from 1.2 ppm to 0.7 ppm. The HHS press release can be found
    here:
    http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2011pres/01/20110107a.html
A more in-depth presentation was given to the Denver Water Board of
Commissioners at the public meeting on April 13, 2011. Thirty-five
concerned citizens from WACC were in attendance. The information
presented detailed the documented side effects of fluoride exposure,
including thyroid disease, kidney failure, I.Q. reduction, and bone
cancer. Also presented was the lack of scientific data on the safety
and efficacy of silicofluoride compounds, which differ from sodium
fluoride both in structure and function. The presentation also
covered the pending litigation involving water fluoridation, and the
medical ethics violations associated with it. Video of the April
    presentation can be viewed here:

Colorado law defines practicing medicine as “holding out one’s
self…as being able to treat…or prevent any human disease” and
“administering any form of treatment.” Since fluoride compounds are
not added to the water to treat the pathogens within it (such as
chlorine), but to treat the individuals consuming it for the purposes
of preventing dental caries (a “human disease”), this would put
municipalities such as Denver Water in a position of practicing
medicine without a license. Furthermore, according to WACC, the lack
of informed consent, the inability to control the dose, and the
dangers presented by fluoride exposure to certain populations – such
as those with thyroid disease or dental fluorosis – merit the
immediate termination of water fluoridation. Dozens of cities in
America have stopped this outdated practice, and the trend seems to be
    growing.
Public meetings at Denver Water are held the second Wednesday of every
month at 9:00AM at 1600 West 12th Avenue, Denver, CO. The next public
meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2011.
The Denver Water Board of Commissioners were appointed by the mayor of
Denver, formerly John Hickenlooper, who now serves as the Governor of
Colorado. The board members can be reached by email at

Brad Will sings the Solidarity Song
    http://www.blip.tv/file/539410
Brad sings “The Solidarity Song” also known as the Teargas song - was the defiant anthem of the resistance to the World Trade Organization that took place in Seattle in 1999. Originally written by Desert Rat, a comrade, Brad added a verse or two of his own, about forests and preserving ecological integrity of this planet; something Brad was dedicated to while he was alive. Brad sang this song in a squat in Amsterdam in 2000. We were in Amsterdam because of the United Nations talks on Climate Change. We were involved with the protests intended to pressure nations and politicians to take real meaningful measures to address the threat of global warming, mass extinction, pollution, etc., (Still waiting for that…!) Brad's songs and his way of singing touched us deep and inspired thousands. He sang from his heart and gave it everything he had. That's also how he lived his life until he was killed at the tender age of 36. Brad’s singing fills my soul with joy though the loss of him still cuts most deeply…

OKC 'Third Suspect' Gary Land -
    Fed Provocateurs Identified?

    By Walter Burien
    Exclusive to Rense.com

    Jeff -

The picture is of the "Third OKC suspect" Gary Land. He was picked up at the same time as McVeigh but released the next day and all mention of him quickly disappeared from the press.

Brian Quig an independent reporter from Tempe, Arizona had this picture up on his web site DCIA.com shortly after the bombing. Brian was diligently working on gathering information on Land to show a cover-up by the Feds. Brian Quig was pushing very hard on the Gary Land issue when he was run down by a car in Phoenix and killed. His web site DCIA.com  subsequently went down. A Google search for "Brian Quig" will still pull up much of Mr. Quig's work centered on exposing government corruption.

I saved this picture from his site before it was lost. I also sent it to my email list a year ago with a note to save it per the OKC bombing. The picture shows Land being hustled out the back door of the Sheriff's office, in hand cuffs (covered with jacket) by several FBI agents.

The scoop Brian Quig was working on was that: Gary Land was a known FBI informant from Phoenix. I, and several militia contacts from Phoenix who were Arizona Sheriffs confirmed back in 1995 that Gary Land after being busted by the police with drugs was made an offer to work under-cover to infiltrate several militia groups in Phoenix around the time of the OKC bombing. Gary Land was asked to leave the militia meetings in Phoenix being that he was a know FBI provocateur. Later he was seen several times hanging out and traveling with McVeigh in Kingman, AZ and elsewhere.

Quig made several trips to Kingman researching Gary Land. Brian Quig investigating Land to establish the solid links that showed the FBI knew and participated in every step of the OKC bombing could have been the primary reason Quig was killed. The police report said Quig was killed (run down) in Phoenix by a car at 1 AM in the morning and listed the event as an accident. I strongly believe that Brian Quig was pushed in front of a car.

This picture and my comments above are given to Rense.com as an EXCLUSIVE with the original picture of Gary Land being courtesy of Brian Quig, a relentless searcher for the truth.

    Truly yours,

    Exodus Damage lyrics
    I'll see you next fall
    At another gun show
I'll call the day before, like usual

But I wanted so much more
    I got exodus damage bleed
    Could not commit
    Some things I'll never be

So now we're talking about this
I'm starting to lose my confidence
No one ever says a word about
So much that happens in the world

    Dance Dance Revolution
    All we're gonna get
    Unless it falls apart
So I say: go, go, go, go down
    Let it fall down
    I'm ready for the end

So the second plane hit at 9:02
I saw it live on a hotel T.V.
Talking on my cell with you
    You said this would happen
And just like that, it did
    Wrong about the feeling
    Wrong about the sound
But right to say we would stand down

An hour went by without a fighter in the sky
You said there's a reason why
So tell me now, I must confess
I'm not sick enough to guess

    Dance Dance Revolution
    All we're gonna get
    Unless it falls apart
So I say: go, go, go, go down
    Let it fall down
    I'm ready for the end

So you hope that one person
    Could solve everything
    And for me, that's you
    Sometimes that dream
    Is a sad delusion
    But sometimes it's true

So now we're talking about this
I'm starting to lose my confidence
No one ever says a word about
So much that happens in the world

    Dance Dance Revolution
    All were gonna get
